‘Macross’, ‘Gundam’ and ‘Visionb of Escaflowne’ producer passes away

Hitomi Kanzaki of Vision of Escaflowne

To pay tribute to the passing of colleague and anime producer Minoru Takanashi, character designer and animator Nobuteru Yuuki posted a Tweet last April 12.

Roughly translated, “Bandai visual producer Takanashi Minoru has passed away. I think Escaflowne would not have been realized without his planning power. We truly appreciate the work done in developing various goods for 2199 (Space Warship Yamato 2199). It seemed only yesterday that our eyes were sparkling with wonder. May his soul rest in peace.” Image: Twitter/@nobuteruyuuki

Anime News Network reports that Takanashi was involved in the development of content in Bandai Visual for almost three decades. He was part of the team for most Macross projects, including Macross II, Macross Plus, Macross 7 and Macross Zero. There was also a proposed live-action Macross movie that has remained unproduced.

Apart from his work on the Macross series, he also acted as Bandai Visual’s project planner for a number of high-profile titles. These include “Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket”, “The Vision of Escaflowne”, “Gunbuster”, “Giant Robo”, “Cowboy Bebop: The Movie” and “Wolf’s Rain”, to name a few.

    Special Rescue Police Winspector

Special Rescue Police Winspector  is a Japanese tokusatsu TV series, part of theMetal Hero Series and the first piece of the Rescue Hero trilogy. The series follows the adventures and missions of a special “Rescue Police” team known as Special Police Winspector, as they stop crimes and respond to dangerous events where regular police force is not sufficient. The team is made up of one human (a hero clad in armor) and two robotic assistants.

Special Police Rescue Winspector was aired on IBCChannel 13 in early 90’s.

Special Rescue Police Winspector takes place in a near-future Japan of the year 1999. As the country is facing a great threat from criminals, new methods of protecting people are created. The Winspector squad consisting of the robot brothers Walter and Bikel along with Ryouma wearing the Fire Tector armor defend against super powered threats ranging from mob attacks to scientific experiments gone terribly wrong. It (and Solbrain) are unique among tokusatsu as there is no central villain.

The series premiered in 1995 and ran for 49 episodes. In 2000, it became the first Mobile Suit Gundam series to premiere on television in the United States. Bandai Entertainment previously released the series in North America on DVD and VHS. The series is available streaming with both English and Japanese audio on Hulu.

The story takes place in the year After Colony 195, when war between the Space Colonies and Earth has begun. To give the colonies an edge, they send 5 young soldiers, trained to perfection, to earth in the most powerful of Mobile Suits—Gundams. With their arrival, the tide of the war changes as they battle against the Earth forces and the Colonies of their origin.

The series spawned the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz sequel OVA, which was later compiled into a film. The series also inspired a number of manga adaptations, including Gundam Wing: The Glory of Losers, which North American publisher Vertical recently announced that it has licensed.

Sunrise and Right Stuf announced their partnership in 2014 to release the Mobile Suit Gundamfranchise in North America.
